That's Afghanistan? That same pic could easily be taken here in my local Cascade Range.

The common image is a lot bleaker than this, that's for sure.
Here is the photo Caption from Strategy Page Cpl. Thomas Bourget, assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Infantry Division, observes the mountain landscape opposite of his position that surrounds the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, April 21, 2009. |

Wow, Nice picture!!
Surely you didn't take this one TomD!! :tongue_ma::36_1_32v: I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy an M1A after I get my Remington 700. I'm sure it would be a lot more fun to shoot tracer or incendiary rounds out of anyways!! :-) Definitely not how I pictured Afghanistan but I believe it, Arizona looks the same way. In the south its all desert and cactus and up north its all piney trees and mountains. Big Country |

Looks just like the Oregon / Washington Cascades. |
Re: Maybe the M14 is sometimes used for long range work
A-stan has a lot of different terrain. Nice pic Tom. Most M-14s are being used in the DM role now as the M-110 comes on line. The M-24 is still out there plugging away but not as much as it used to be. Semi auto, sub moa rifles will probably be the future (at least for the military) in 7.62x51 tactical precision work . The added firepower of a semi far outweighs the narrowing gap in performance.
BTW, the US Sniper with the most confirmed and unconfirmed kills in American history used an M-21 (accurized M-14). http://modern-war.suite101.com/artic..._us_sniper_ace |

Agree - semi-auto firepower is a big improvement over the bolt....and not a lot of trade off on accuracy of a high end accurized M14. This is my choice......I also love the Garands....same animal as the M14 pretty much....just no box mag....actually prefer the 8 round enblock clips....you don't have to lug around the weight of extra box mags.... And - I prefer capability of 30.06 over that of the 308. |
Re: Maybe the M14 is sometimes used for long range work
THey have been using modified m14's in afghanistan and even Iraq for quite some time. I was actualy just having this very same conversation with the staff at a local gun store yesterday.
They are re-issuing the m14 to special units calling them EBR, Enhanced Battle Rifles. It is a powerful gun with a very far effective range and bullet. From what an older Marine was telling me yesterday, the EBR's are outfitted with aluminum alloy stocks, isntead of synthetic or wood. I wouldnt mind having one, if I could afford it. |

Here are the two Crazy Horse M-14s I used to have (before I sold them). Ron Smith of Smith Enterprise built them for me, I accessorized and Duracoated them. Smith Ent. currently has the mil contract to refurbish DM M-14s although they are just as accurate as the SASS M-110s and do not require a bedding job. Both of my rifles shot at least 1 moa (but probably would have shot sub moa with a better shooter:smile:).

Re: Maybe the M14 is sometimes used for long range work
Ahh, nice to see a man with discriminating taste in rifles. Excellent sticks!
Mine is built on an LRB M25. I'm thinking of adding a cheekpiece like the one on top, as the one from SEI doesn't give a satisfactory cheekweld IMO. BTW, a Crazy Horse recently shot a 10 round group into under 10 inches @ 1000 yards at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. That's in a standard FG stock (no bedding), shooting M118LR ammo. The M110 doesn't even come close. |
Re: Maybe the M14 is sometimes used for long range work
The top rifle was built on the M25 receiver and the bottom on the standard M14SA receiver. The M25 is the perfect solution to the age old challenge of mounting an optic on a M1/M14 design. I sure did hate selling all of my firearms at a show last year but with this new anti gun govt of ours, it's better safe than sorry:wink: BTW the cheek piece is from Desert Warrior. I really like(d) it. Bx3
